#3 Summer Learning Journey

This Summer my school (Awahono School) are taking part in the Summer Learning Journey, where each week we get assigned three activities to complete and then to put on our blogs.  Activity information down below--

Bonus Activity: Waka Ama
To this day, the people of New Zealand still use waka. Instead of using their waka to transport them from one place to another, they sometimes use waka in special events and in sporting competitions such as Waka Ama. Both boys and girls compete in Waka Ama boat races.

Task: Watch this short video of a Waka Ama race. On your blog tell us whether you would like to be in a Waka Ama race one day. Why or why not?

Make sure to check my blog again in a couple of days to see more posts like this one.

WAKA AMA RACE YES OR NO??

I think having the opportunity to participate in the Waka Ama race New Zealand would be amazing and I think that I would definitely take it on.  It would certainly tick another thing off my bucket list, and would be something that I would remember forever.  Although it would be an amazing opportunity, I have never participated in an activity like the Waka Ama race. I can imagine that it would take quite a lot of strength and training to be able to row the waka nice and fast so you can get to the finish line first.  However it would still be fun whether I was rowing the waka or not. In conclusion I think participating in the Waka Ama race would be a fun cultural experience that I would love to take part in one day.

  1. Hi Ella

Yes, I agree with you. I think it would be great to participate in a Waka Ama race too.
I imagine that you would have to be very fit to be able to paddle with great speed on board a waka.
How do you think you would go with your balance? Do you think it would be hard to stay balanced with everyone else on the waka?
I think that they have Waka Ama racing on Lake Brunner. It would be really good to see in real life, wouldn't it?

Good work Ella, keep it up.

    Until next time

    Allie :)
